Thus, sanctification is simply the means by which we are set apart, separated or consecrated from anything that is unholy.
Scripture tells us that when we accept Christ into our hearts, we are "positionally" sanctified because of what He has already done for us on the cross and the holiness that He has already imputed to us. (Hebrew 10:10) In other words, it's a fact that we are already separated and consecrated unto Him. However, in order to experience this sanctification in our lives, we must first relinquish ourselves to Him and allow Him to remove or cut away anything in us that quenches His Spirit.
As the Lord sanctifies us, we also have a role we play in this process.
See what Paul tells the Church:
Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my
presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your
salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to
will and to act according to his good purpose. (Philippians 2:12-13)
